March 29, 2001 — GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE —

that Steven Davis, CEO, appeared at the Game
Developer's Conference in San Jose, California
on June 24, 2001, to discuss the protective

presented his paper "Why Cheating Matters:
Cheating, Game Security, and the Future of
On-line Gaming" to an audience of leading game
developers and executives attending the 5-day
long event. The paper addressed the various
business models for network games and the impact
that cheating has on their bottom line.
"Cheating is not simply a technical problem for
programmers and game developers, it will affect
the success of every game company developing
network games - wireless, cable, and, of course,
the Internet." Mr. Davis argued that the move to
network based games is transforming computer
gaming from a publication business to an
operations business - where revenue comes from
fees or subscriptions to access games. This
change places cheating right at the center of
the business challenges these companies face.
Additionally, the potential for regulation of
the industry if there were cheating scandal and
the increasing globalization of the gaming
market means that companies need to plan
